Halotherapy

Halotherapy (salt therapy) is an all-natural, drug-free and holistic therapy that is done in an environment made to recreate a natural salt cave. It uses a combination of Himalayan salt and a halo-generator technology to maintain adequate salt levels in the room. The Himalayan salt used is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial property that reduces inflammation and helps open up breathing passages.

What is Halotherapy?

Halotherapy, also called salt therapy, is a holistic approach to finding relief and reaching healing in a controlled treatment environment. As you inhale the salt air, you stimulate your body's natural ability to heal itself. Halotherapy is a type of dry salt therapy similar to speleotherapy. While speleotherapy occurs in natural environments like salt mines and caves, halotherapy takes place in artificial environments like our treatment room at Spa Royale. We recreate natural salt caves by infusing dry salt aerosol or Himalayan salt into the treatment room using modern technology called a halogenerator. Using this specialized equipment, we maintain adequate salt levels in the room.

History of Halotherapy

Halotherapy began in the 1800s in Europe and has just recently become a thing in the US. The healing therapy began in the salt mines in Poland, where miners who came in constant contact with salt during their work realized that they were experiencing relief from all kinds of respiratory and skin conditions. They felt much better and got healed from these kinds of ailments when compared with other miners. This discovery led to speleotherapy, which saw people using underground salt caves to heal their ailments. They would spend 2-3 hours a day in the cave for 2-3 months. Before long, people began to travel to salt mines to experience the healing that they carried. Going to an underground salt cave for extended periods isn't all that easy. So, halotherapy developed as practitioners tried to make the practice much easier and more accessible. The word 'halo' is Greek for salt. Today, the salt environment in underground caves is recreated in more accessible locations using technology and Himalayan salt. By spending 45 to 90 minutes in our halochamber at Spa Royale, you will experience the same healing tendencies of underground salt caves in a modern setting. Halotherapy is an increasingly popular relaxation practice, with around 300 salt caves in existence today in the United States.

What are the Benefits of Halotherapy?

Halotherapy has many benefits, which provide relief from many serious conditions. Halotherapy is known to be able to improve respiratory function, reduce inflammation, clear the lungs and nasal cavities of toxins, and treat skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, and eczema. There have been studies to show how halotherapy can help with these conditions. 65% of participants in a 2013 clinical trial wanted to continue practicing halotherapy.

Improves Respiratory Function

Halotherapy can help heal respiratory conditions like asthma, allergies, and bronchitis. It also provides effective relief from cough and cold. In a 2014 study, researchers used rats to explore how halotherapy may be useful for improving respiratory problems. They found that the dry salt environment where they kept the rats helped improve their respiratory cells. If you want to breathe easier, you may want to try halotherapy.

Reduces Inflammation

Salt contains anti-inflammatory properties such as Sodium Chloride that make it great for alleviating such symptoms. By breathing in the Himalayan salt air at our halochamber at Spa Royale, you will be introducing toxin-fighting agents into your body that help you fight inflammation. Whatever the cause of the inflammation, you’ll see noticeable differences after a halotherapy session.

Helps Relax Your Body

Halotherapy is super relaxing. As the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents in the Himalayan salt go to work, your body begins to relax. The halochamber itself is a relaxing environment that helps you get over any stressor while bringing you to the present. You will come out of your therapy session renewed.

How Often Should You Experience Halotherapy?

This would depend on the condition you are treating with halotherapy. You should continue using halotherapy until you notice your symptoms improve. You can work with your halotherapist to determine how many sessions are good for you. When you book a halotherapy appointment, you will have a schedule designed to cater to your needs. Our halotherapy sessions at Spa Royale range from 45 minutes to 60 minutes. How many sessions you would need depends on your goals with your halotherapy.

Who is a Good Fit for Halotherapy?

Halotherapy is suitable for both children and adults. Anyone with respiratory or skin conditions that are looking for some relief can also try halotherapy. You should discuss the condition you want to treat with your halotherapist as the salt room may not be good for acute infections or some conditions like fever and is not meant for treating injuries. You may also use halotherapy for relaxation purposes. Children's therapy sessions are shorter than adult sessions, but halotherapy is for everyone.
